Welcome to the Scout section!
Hello my name is Darren and I am the
Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts
in Weymouth and Portland.
The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10½ and 14
years. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they
are 15 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the
Scout Group.
Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part
of their programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the
key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her
achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges.
Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about
the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities
and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents.
It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal
attitudes
Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to
taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping,
survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities,
anything from abseiling to yachting.
Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating
fully in the adventure and opportunities of life.
My vision for Scouting within this
District is
to
enable and support the leadership teams around the District in delivering
high quality, traditional scouting activities and skills, and combining
these with more modern activities, create a scout section that the District
can be proud of, and forms a model that the County can follow.

Regional Cooking Competition
Two teams from Dorset headed up to
Cheltenham on Sunday 28th March for the Regional Cooking
Competition. Bransgore Scouts had the right idea and stayed overnight in a
hotel whereas Weymouth East, who were away at the Outdoor Show the previous
day, headed up on the morning of the competition. With fourteen teams from
across both the South and South West spread out over two rooms the
atmosphere was tense (well the leaders were) as the teams set out their
equipment ready for the 10.30am start. The two Dorset teams were positioned
next to each other, which was nice as the teams get on well and were a
support to each.
The leaders were allowed back just prior to
the judging time to see the wonderful spread their teams had produced,
special mention must go to both teams desserts, Bransgore had changed their
dessert after the county competition –which was the only change to either
teams menu- and produced a perfect sponge syrup pudding whilst Weymouth East
stuck with their delicious Eton Mess.
At the presentation ceremony the teams
discovered they had received identical scores meaning they were guaranteed
equal placing and at the end of the afternoon it was discovered that they
had taken joint eighth place, a great position for two teams at their first
regional event. As the cars were packed up for the long journey home Team
Dorset left the building with huge smiles on their faces knowing they had
done their County proud, and taking note of all they had learned, hoping to
be back next year, now where is that recipe book.
St George's Day 25th April 2010
The entire District celebrated St George's Day at the
Easton Methodist Church, Portland. Approximately 200 members paraded from the
Senior School to Easton Methodist Church. Many Chief Scout Awards were
presented to the younger members as well as leaders achieving awards for their
many years dedicated to Scouting. These ranged from 5 years to 30 years!
Over £200 was raised for "Julia's House"; the chosen
charity for this year.
District Banner Camp 4th - 6th June
2010
The District and County Banner Competitions are where select teams enter
a strictly run competition which is designed to showcase the teams'
knowledge and experience with "Back to basics" Scouting. The winning
team from the District competition will then go on to represent the
District at the County competition. The winning team are able to hold on
to the coveted flag for a year.
County
Banner
2nd - 4th
July
2010
The
finalists from each of the District competitions all convene to prove who
has the best Scouting Skills within Dorset!
Goose 2010 August
All of the sections, groups within
each District in Dorset will all convene at Budden's Farm to celebrate a superb
camp. The Scouts stay at the camp for a week and are able to try activities both
on and off site which may not ordinarily be available to them;
Quads, high ropes, gliding,
abseiling, paint balling, power boating, canoeing, rafting, orienteering, hill
walking, micro-lighting are just a few of the activities. This camp is an experience
never to be forgotten!
If
you would like to join us in this action packed
year and would like to become a Scout, please

With the hard work
and dedication of the leaders who run the section, the
children have a fun and action packed time in Scouting
and they will carry these memories with them for a
lifetime.
We are always
looking to recruit adults to become leaders or assistant
leaders. If you would like to help within the troop, or
attend the activities, please contact Sharon.
