Welcome to the Scout section!

Hello my name is Darren and I am the Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts in Weymouth and Portland.

The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10˝ and 14 years. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 15 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group.

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes

Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting.

Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life.

My vision for Scouting within this District is to enable and support the leadership teams around the District in delivering high quality, traditional scouting activities and skills, and combining these with more modern activities, create a scout section that the District can be proud of, and forms a model that the County can follow.

DISTRICT SCOUT CAMP

In July we held a District camp at Buddens where all sections of Scouting attended. There were approximately 250 members of Weymouth & Portland Scouts celebrating the best of Scouting by completing adventurous activities including archery, rifle shooting, rock wall climbing and a zip slide. They also did back to basic skills and held a camp fire to sing along to songs that I am sure most of you will remember!

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND SCOUTS CELEBRATE THEIR 100TH YEAR

There were 300+ Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Fellowship and leaders celebrating our hundredth year of Scouting within Weymouth & Portland with a huge party on Weymouth Esplanade, followed by games and competitions on the beach. Weymouth College supplied a large birthday cake for everyone to enjoy.

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS 26TH SEPTEMBER 2009

Over two hundred Scouts and leaders attended a treasure hunt in and around the town, and had an evening to remember with displays of Scouting memorabilia and albums from all Groups historical and present. There was also a replica of the first Grand Howl, a 1940’s Cub play, a Scout sketch. and a joint camp fire song for all to join in.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Weymouth & Portland Scouts attended Remembrance Services held throughout Weymouth, Portland & Portesham  to remember those who served in conflicts and wars.

CAROL SERVICE

This will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Weymouth from 3pm - 4pm. The service will be attended by all sections to enjoy a Carol Service organised by the Cub section. This is also an opportunity to present special awards.

There will be a collection which will be presented to the “Guantlett” charity. The charity aids outward bounds activities for under privileged children.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR 2010

District Cooking Competition – Saturday 16 January

The Scouts took part in an annual cooking competition. The Scouts were given a budget and had to prepare a meal which was then judged to high standards. Congratulations to East who won the competition (wearing chequered hats). Well done to North for coming second, (wearing green aprons), and South who came third. (wearing South T-shirts)

"Thank you to all those who entered, it was nice to see so many troops represented. My best wishes go to the East team who go on to represent the District at the County Competition in Blanford."

To see a picture of the participating Troops, go to the "Gallery".

County Cooking Competition

After winning the District cooking competition, East went on to represent Weymouth & Portland at the county event held in Shaftesbury. As they were only 5 points behind behind the winning team they can also go and represent the County at this years Regional Competition.
