HRH The Duchess of Cambridge has become Scouting’s newest volunteer and will help at local cub packs and beaver colonies, Clarence House has announced.

The announcement comes as a great endorsement of Scouting’s commitment to allow adults to volunteer their time on a flexible basis. The Duchess will help run a variety of activities relevant to her skills and interests. This could include running games, teaching first aid or cooking on campfires.

Scouting’s biggest community and fundraising project in decades will take place next May.

Up to 40,000 Scouts are expected to take part in Scout  Community Week between 14 and 20 May 2012.

This volunteering and fundraising initiative will inspire Scouts  to perform local tasks on a scale not seen since Scout Job  Week ceased 20 years ago.

Scout Community Week will also provide an opportunity to  raise funds for local Scouting. The public will be able to  donate online, by text and by bank transfer.

Congratulations to the Team and Leaders for their outstanding performance which earned them first place in the annual Frostbite competition which this year took place at Braggers Wood on the eastern edge of the New Forest National Park. ACC Mark ‘Homer’ Newman said that they were worthy winners as he presented them with the Frostbite Cup.

Many congratulations also for the three teams from Houlding and Gauntlett Units who were great ambassadors for Weymouth and Portland District, performing to a very high standard and their leaders who accompanied them and supported the event. I hope you have all warmed up and at least partially caught up on your sleep.

Wanted

1 representative from each Cub Pack, Scout Troop and Explorer Unit to come along and talk with our Youth Advisors about what you want to do in Scouting in 2012

As we continue to seek the opinions of our young people and let it shape the way we scout, we wish to ensure our District Youth Advisors can reflect the views of all our members at county discussions as well as taking an active role in local scouting.

We currently have 3 Youth Advisors, comprising of 2 x Explorer Scouts and 1 Scout, and we want to recruit a fourth, which we hope to find following  a forum being led by the Youth Advisor team on SATURDAY 10th MARCH.

If you are interested in representing the views of YOUR Pack, Troop or Unit ata District level,  make sure you ask your Adult Leadership team about it at your next meeting.

Adult Leaders can find more details, along with a poster to put up in your Hall in the Leaders area.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the introduction of the Explorer Scout and Scout Network sections, the Scout Association are releasing a special occasional badge, chosen by members of the Movement.

And there’s plenty for us to celebrate in 2012.

Since 2002, the number of 14 to 25-year-olds in Scouting has soared. Our 2011 census counted 36,346 Explorer Scouts (including 9,030 Young Leaders) and 4,885 Scout Network members. This adds up to more than double the 19,245 Venture Scouts recorded in 2001.

The winning badge will be available to buy from Scout Shops in January. It is to be worn above the Membership Award on the left side, where all occasional badges go.

On 1 January 2012 PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) and PRS (Performing Rights Society), who represent the interests of different music copyright holders, launched a joint licence scheme.

This scheme will affect all premises owned or used by Scouting as they will now all need a new PPL and PRS licence. Failure to obtain a licence may be a breach of copyright and be subject to prosecution.
