FUND-RAISING APPEAL

We have been running Scouting activities in Fortuneswell for boys and girls between the ages of 8 - 11 in our    section for more than 25 years.

In September 2009, we started up the  Section for 11 - 14 year olds after an absence (in the Underhill area of Portland) for more than 35 years!

We need to continually raise funds to keep these sections running, so we can continue to provide a much needed resource for our youngsters in the area.

We achieve this by running various fund-raising activities throughout the year including Tombola stands and stalls at local fetes, bag packing at supermarkets  and other fund-raising events.

We are therefore constantly in need of good quality items we can use for prizes  and items to sell  at these events.  Anything will be gratefully recieved, even smaller items that could be made up into hampers etc would be gratefully accepted.

At this time of year, we are especially hoping for items with a Christmas theme - Chocolates, Wine, Cards, Wrapping paper, Crackers, Christmas foods etc.

If you feel you are able to donate ANYTHING at all, please either bring it along with you on a Friday Evening when you are dropping your Cubs or Scouts off, or you can contact either Andy via the GSL contact link above, the Webmaster (from the ‘contct us’ link at the bottom of the page), or either of our Fundraising team listed below , who will be only too happy to arrange for someone to come along and collect it.

THANK YOU

If you want to help out at our next Fundraising event, or wish to be part of the fund-raising team, please contact anyone listed above.

Scouts Bag Pack for Alzheimer’s Society

23/12/11

A massive WELL DONE to our Scouts who raised a fantastic total of £327.30 on Friday which was split 50/50 between the Groups funds and the Alzheimer's Society.

Tesco Portland contacted both 1st Portland and 2nd Portland Scout groups just before Christmas, asking if we would be willing to help out by running a bag pack for a couple of hours in their store to help raise funds for their chosen local charity. Both Groups were obviously only too willing to oblige, and shared the day work with 1st Portland doing the 10am to 12pm Shift, and us working 12pm to 4pm.

CUBS GETS ALL WRAPPED UP IN MUMMY MASQUERADE

Friday 20th January 2012

Our Cubs really got into the mood when they did some post- Christmas wrapping last Friday,  finding out what it was like to be an Egyptian Mummy.

It was done as part of their Global Challenge work, and as you can see in the pictures below, they really got wrapped up in the programme!

2nd PORTLAND’S FIRST EVER “SCOUTS HAVE TALENT” COMPETITION UNCOVERS NEW GIRL-BAND SENSATION (maybe)

Friday 2nd December 2012

The Scout Troop really put their hearts and souls into our first ever very own Talent show tonight as part of their Creative Challenge award.

The Judges, who were made up of 3 of the Adult leadership team, were treated to 4 very different acts, comprising of a magician, a comedy sketch team, a singing duo and a murder mystery play. Marks out of 10 were awarded for originality, overall effort and of course, sheer raw talent, (of which there was bucket loads).

Unfortunately, there could only be one winner, and after much deliberation, the judges decided that singing girl duo ‘2Boots’ had pipped it due to their extra effort with their costumes.

Pictures of the 4 acts can be seen below...

Important changes to Scouts meetings

19th April 2012

Hi everyone,

I have very recently started a new job which unfortunately now requires me to work most evenings.

This means that unless we can find an alternative solution, there will be no-one to run the weekly Scouts meetings on a Friday - thus for all intense and purposes, will mean the closure of the Scouts troop in Underhill.

I for one do NOT want to see this happen,  and I am sure you all feel the same. I therefore wish to propose a change of the meeting times from a Friday night, to a couple of hours over the week-end (where I can still run the meetings during the day).  Please be aware that this ONLY involves the SCOUTS and in no way effects the CUBS section, who will continue to meet on a Friday evening.

Although this change may be somewhat challenging for some of you, I strongly believe this could also bring a lot of benefits for the troop, in as much as

1.       We will be able to do much more outdoor activities having guaranteed daylight every week

2.       It may encourage more Young People to join us who are (for whatever reason) unavailable on a Friday night

3.       It will eradicate the late nights / over-tired Scouts.

This change obviously cannot happen without your agreement, so I therefore need to know everyone’s preferences before any decision is made.

Could you all therefore please let me know by return, which of the below proposed new times would suit both you and your sons/daughters the most.

I will then rearrange the meetings to coincide with the option that gets the most votes.

Option 1               SATURDAY     11AM – 1PM

Option 2               SATURDAY     1PM – 3PM

Option 3               SUNDAY      11AM – 1PM

Option 4               SUNDAY      1PM – 3PM

Option 5               Sorry - my son/daughter cannot attend Scouts

                           over a weekend

I am VERY sure that whichever one is chosen will not suit everyone, but I can only apologise to you and hope you understand that at the present time, this really is the only option I can see open to us, which I am sure you will agree is better than having no Scouts meetings at all.

Many thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation with this.

Regards

This option was unanimously preferred with 100% of all the responses received!

The new meeting time will start from THIS SATURDAY 5th May.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING!!

FIRST EVER PORTLAND EXPLORER UNIT IS FORMED

3rd May 2012

WELL DONE and CONGRATULATIONS to BEN, TITUS, SINEAD, SIMON and MATT, who were invested and became the founder members of the FIRST EVER Portland Explorer unit during Dragon24 last week-end. As befitting this historic moment in Portland Scouting, the ceremony was performed outside in some woodland (in the rain) at MIDNIGHT on Saturday/Sunday, by the District Explorer Scout Commissioner Ian Etheridge, and was attended by the Adult Leadership teams from both Portland Scout Groups, the District Commissioner Debbie Shaw and other members of the Troop.

Exact details of when and where the new Unit will be run is still to be confirmed, as this is [largely] to be decided by the explorers themselves. Nigel Broughton, who is  very well known to the group due to him helping out at both Cubs and Scouts for the past few years, and who has extensive knowledge of Explorer Scouting through his role as head of the District Young Leader scheme has very kindly volunteered to run the Unit. The First meeting will be held in Brackenbury hall Underhill after cubs on Friday night.

Wheelbarrows required

2nd May 2012

We have been asked to provide help at the Plant and Craft fair run by Portland Rotary next Sunday 13th May.

TESCO store (Easton) have very kindly agreed to lend us 5 of their shopping trolleys for the day so the Cubs and Scouts can help transport purchases to customers cars, however these will only work on concrete. I am therefore sending out an appeal to ask if you have a WHEELBARROW you can lend to us so we can transport the plants etc. from the stalls across the [possibly] wet grass as well. If anyone can help, I will be VERY grateful if you could let me know as soon as possible
